Basseterre, St. Kitts, July 23, 2010 (SKNIS): Acting Commissioner of Police, Stafford Liburd, has expressed that improving the trust between the law enforcement agency and the public, is an important component to tackling crime and maintaining peace in society.

During a recent SKNIS interview, Mr. Liburd commented that the community policing plan has been successful in fostering better relations that has resulted in actionable police interventions in solving crimes. He noted that recent infringements by a few members of the rank could possibly serve to undermine the goodwill that has been fostered, but assured the public that all internal matters were being addressed.

“It is not very pleasing to hear officers break the law or even breach certain disciplinary codes,” the police official remarked. Mr. Liburd explained that the instances were investigated and the High Command of the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force has recommended that the officers face immediate discharge.

The Acting Commissioner cemented the top brass’ unanimous decision and sought to build on the gains forged with the community.

“I hope that [the response] signifies that we have dealt with such infractions in such a manner to say that we in the High Command and others within the organization will not tolerate such indiscipline. We are moving forward, and while there may be infractions, we are willing to deal with them swiftly and decisively.”

Acting Commissioner Liburd also singled out the Rotary Club of Liamigua for recognizing the hard work of the police by instituting an award programme. The first recipient of the Police Service Award, was No. 344 Acting Corporal Dexter Jacobs, who was credited for his dedication to, and professionalism in executing his duties. Mr. Liburd said the public can additionally play a role in this effort, which would help to boost the morale of the uniformed men and women.

“When you appreciate the work of an officer … by even sending a note to the Office of the Commissioner, which identifies the officer who has done a good deed, that goes a long way,” Mr. Liburd emphasized. “Another area is cooperating with the police, sharing information, building that confidence with that officer also strengthens and supports the police and gives us that energy; that drive.”

The public is encouraged to call, write or visit the Office of the Commissioner for other ways they can show support to the Royal St. Christopher and Nevis Police Force, thereby promoting peace and stability.
