United Nations Headquarters, New York (28th April, 2026) — The iconic Saint Kitts and Nevis dish goat water was prominently featured at the inaugural reception marking the International Day for Small Island Developing States (SIDS), held at United Nations Headquarters on Friday, April 24, 2026.

The landmark occasion brought together delegates from 193 UN Member States, underscoring the resilience, cultural richness, and global contributions of Small Island Developing States through a shared celebration of identity, heritage, and cuisine.

A centerpiece of the reception was goat water, a traditional Saint Kitts and Nevis dish expertly prepared by Rev. Veronica Williams-Gumbs. The dish received strong praise from attendees, many experiencing it for the first time and warmly embracing the opportunity to engage with the Federation’s culinary heritage.

Mrs. Lecia Phipps of the Permanent Mission of Saint Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations said:

“The dish was very well-received by attendees. It was a true delight for Ambassador Williams and Team SKNUN to share Saint Kitts and Nevis through our culinary culture. Food is one of our most powerful expressions of identity, and this was a proud moment for our nation.”

Mrs. Phipps also highlighted the broader context of the Mission’s work at the United Nations, noting that while the issues addressed in the UN system are serious and require sustained engagement, cultural exchange plays a vital role in strengthening mutual understanding and connection among nations.

Ambassador Mutryce Williams reflected on the occasion, stating:

“The work we do at the United Nations is serious and deeply consequential for our people and for SIDS globally. At the same time, it was a lovely evening of sharing our island’s culinary culture, and of sharing the stories and preparation of goat water with my colleagues in a spirit of warmth and connection.”

Ambassador Williams and her team underscored the reception as an important platform for cultural diplomacy, enhancing visibility for SIDS and deepening appreciation of their shared heritage within the international community.

For Saint Kitts and Nevis, the event marked a moment of national pride, as its culinary traditions were showcased before diplomats and delegates from around the world. The presentation of goat water reinforced the enduring role of food as a powerful medium for storytelling, heritage, and cultural exchange.

The International Day for Small Island Developing States is a United Nations observance dedicated to highlighting the distinct social, economic, and environmental challenges faced by SIDS, while also celebrating their cultural heritage and their essential contributions to global sustainable development.
