United Nations, New York, (Permanent Mission of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations) (October 8, 2026) – The name of Saint Kitts and Nevis resonated through the halls of the United Nations General Assembly on Thursday, October 8, as the Federation’s distinguished contribution to the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly received high-level recognition from the President of the 81st session and fellow Member States. During deliberations on the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly, H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman, President of the 81st session, commended H.E. Dr. Mutryce Agatha Williams, Permanent Representative of St. Kitts and Nevis to the United Nations, and H.E. Mr. Cornel Feruță, Permanent Representative of Romania, for their exemplary stewardship as Co-Chairs of the revitalization process during the 80th session.

The commendation was echoed by representatives of other Member States, who took the rostrum to express their appreciation for the Co-Chairs’ leadership and dedicated service. Their interventions offered a powerful affirmation of the importance of the work undertaken and the diplomacy, perseverance and consensus-building required to advance an agenda central to the effectiveness and future of the United Nations. The 80th session was consequential in both scope and significance. Beyond the vital undertaking of revitalizing the General Assembly and strengthening its capacity to deliver on its mandate, the session also witnessed one of the most consequential processes in the life of the Organization: the selection of the next Secretary-General of the United Nations. These parallel responsibilities underscored the importance of effective multilateral institutions and the need for principled leadership at a defining moment for the United Nations.

For St. Kitts and Nevis, the recognition carries significance well beyond the commendation itself. It affirms the Federation’s ability to contribute meaningfully to shaping the institutional future of the United Nations and demonstrates that a nation’s influence on the world stage is not determined by its size, but by the strength of its diplomacy, the credibility of its leadership and the substance of its contribution. As calls grow for a United Nations that is more effective, transparent, representative and responsive to the needs of its Member States, the work of the revitalization Co-Chairs stands as a reminder that institutional progress depends on the willingness of Member States to lead, build bridges and pursue reform in the collective interest. St. Kitts and Nevis has demonstrated that small states can occupy a consequential place in these efforts, helping shape the deliberative processes through which the international community addresses its most pressing challenges.

The recognition also belongs to the dedicated diplomats whose commitment and expertise supported the Co-Chairs throughout this important undertaking. Ambassador Williams and Ambassador Feruță expressed their appreciation for Ms. Lecia Phipps of St. Kitts and Nevis and Ms. Amalia Pufulescu of Romania, whose professionalism, diligence and contributions were integral to the work of their respective teams. This moment is a source of pride for St. Kitts and Nevis and a testament to the enduring value of principled multilateral engagement. The Federation’s contribution affirms a powerful truth: a nation need not be large to lead, and it need not be powerful by conventional measures to help shape the future of the world.
