Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis (15th May 2026) — On 13th May 2026, Mr. Michael Penny, Officer in Charge at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Saint Kitts and Nevis, was pleased to engage with Her Excellency Karla Gabriela Samayoa Recari, Ambassador of the Republic of Guatemala, on behalf of the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
The meeting reaffirmed the longstanding and friendly relations between Saint Kitts and Nevis and Guatemala, which were formally established in 1992, and provided an opportunity for both sides to discuss areas of common interest and future cooperation.
Among the matters discussed were regional interconnectivity, collaboration within the blue economy, and the growing challenge posed by sargassum across the Caribbean region. Ambassador Samaoya expressed Guatemala’s strong interest in working with Saint Kitts and Nevis on initiatives related to sargassum management and sustainable marine development.
Agriculture was also highlighted as a key area for potential collaboration, particularly in relation to coffee, sugar, and other agricultural commodities. These areas may support efforts to strengthen food security, which remains a central pillar of Saint Kitts and Nevis’ Sustainable Island State Agenda.
To this end, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties and advancing practical areas of cooperation for the mutual benefit of citizens of Saint Kitts and Nevis and Guatemala.
