Basseterre, Saint Kitts and Nevis (15th May, 2026) – On 13th May 2026, Mr. Michael Penny, Officer in Charge at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomed His Excellency Farouk Benmokhtar, Ambassador of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria accredited to Saint Kitts and Nevis on behalf of the Right Honourable Dr. Denzil Douglas, Minister of Foreign Affairs, to discuss deepening cooperation between Saint Kitts and Nevis and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria in several critical areas of development and mutual interest.

Discussions centered on strengthening international partnerships and advancing practical opportunities for collaboration in travel and connectivity, agriculture, tourism, energy and scholarships. Both parties acknowledged the longstanding historical and cultural connections between the African region and the Caribbean and reaffirmed their commitment to deepening diplomatic relations for the mutual benefit of their peoples.

A key area of discussion focused on improving travel and transportation linkages between Africa and the Caribbean. The engagement explored future collaboration opportunities to facilitate greater connectivity and encourage stronger people to exchange people across both regions, acknowledging the challenges currently being faced surrounding affordability, and efficiency.

In the area of energy, special attention was given to sustainable and renewable energy solutions. Officer in Charge, Mr. Penny, highlighted the importance of advancing clean energy partnerships and supporting initiatives that contribute to long term environmental sustainability, focusing on the Government’s Sustainable Island State Agenda.

His Excellency Ambassador Benmokhtar reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to fostering closer relations with Saint Kitts and Nevis and expressed optimism regarding future collaboration efforts in areas of shared interest and development.

The meeting concluded with a mutual commitment to continued diplomatic engagement and the pursuit of initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation between Saint Kitts and Nevis and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria.
